Practice Sessions for Contra Musicians

We have two groups here in Columbus. All instruments and all levels of ability are welcome at both.

Big Scioty Open Band

The Big Scioty Open Band is practicing before the contra dances at First Congregational Church on first and third Saturdays. We practice in the "Parlor" in the church. Enter the building from the East doors as usual then go up a short flight of stairs and turn to the right. See the dance schedule for times. Everyone is welcome regardless of musical ability. Whether you are a beginning musician, an experienced one new to this area, experienced in playing other kinds of music, or whatever, you are welcome. We play slow to help beginners get up to speed.

In the past two years we have played for several local dances.

Most of our tunes come from the KY Contra tunes.pdf. Lately we have been adding some tunes from other sources.

Weekly Musician's Jam

The weekly Musicians' Jam meets Sunday afternoons from 1:00 to 3:00. All instruments and all ability levels are welcome. We will be gathering at the home of Jan Fleming and Frank Phillips, 44 E California Ave., Columbus, OH. 43202. Contact Jan to verify any particular jam date.

Some of the tunes we will be playing come from KY Contra tunes.pdf (this document contains music as well as a list of tunes).

Directions: From N. High St. and North Broadway, go 6 blocks south on High. Turn east (L) onto E. California. Jan's house is on the North side of the street. It's roughly the sixth house on your left as you go up the hill (might be one or two off in my estimate of the count). Look for the curving brick stairway leading up to the front porch. View Map.
